THE INCEPTION AND BRIEF HISTORY OF US CUSTOMS

The US customs Service was created in 1789 due to an urgent need for revenue after the Revolutionary War. Funds were collected by charging duties on imported goods and for over 100 years the US Customs Service was the primary source of revenue for the government. As time progressed responsibilities of the customs service grew to include federal law enforcement and homeland security.

THE MODERN US CUSTOMS SERVICE & PWS

Today, income taxes are the primary source of revenue for the government, but customs duties still provide substantial income. All people and products entering the US must be cleared for entry by Customs before exiting a bonded Customs area. In most cases, commercial products entering the US must be cleared through customs by a licensed US Customs Broker such PWS.

Depending on the types of products that you are importing and the mode there are many other regulations that must be followed. There can be severe penalties for failure to follow all proper regulations. It is critical for an importer to choose a service provider that is: experienced, has a comprehensive compliance plan, is C-TPAT Certified and possesses an excellent compliance record.
